1. Can my child live with someone else?

Yes.  However:

• you must stay in contact with the child and caregiver,
• assure the caregiver is safe and reliable,
• assure you are available to approve health care/school needs or assign legal authority to the caregiver,
• continue to provide financial support, and
• continue to provide health insurance.  

You must also:

• notify any agency you receive money from to support this child (example: financial unit, child support or social security office) of this arrangement.

2. At what age can my child be left alone?

The following is information from MN Statute:

• Children may not be left alone for any period of time when they are 7 years old and under. 
• At ages 8-10, they cannot be left alone for more than 3 hours. 
• At ages 11-13,  they cannot be left alone for more than 12 hours 
• At ages 14-15, they cannot be left alone for more than 24 hours 
• At ages 16-17, they may be left alone for more than 24 hours with a plan in place concerning how to respond to an emergency and having an adult accessible who can respond to an emergency. 

3. Can my child be emancipated?

Morrison County does not support emancipation of a youth under the age of 18 years for any reason.

4. At what age can my child babysit?

Minnesota State Law sets the criteria for this.  

Any child under the age of 11 should not provide child care.

Children ages 11-15 years who are placed in a child care role are subject to the same time restrictions of being left alone:

• At ages 11-13, they cannot be left alone for more than 12 hours 
• At ages 14-15, they cannot be left alone for more than 24 hours 

5. Are parenting classes available?

There are parenting resources offered through the Early Childhood Family Education Programs.
