The deadline was previously Oct. 1, 2021, but the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is extending the deadline to May 1, 2023, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
โProtecting the health, safety, and security of our communities is our top priority,โ said DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. โAs our country continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, extending the REAL ID full enforcement deadline will give states needed time to reopen their driverโs licensing operations and ensure their residents can obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card.โ
Beginning May 3, 2023, you will not be able to use your standard driverโs license or ID to board a domestic flight or enter federal facilities. Instead, you will need a valid passport or passport card, enhanced driverโs license or ID card or another federally accepted form of identification.
